Sometimes the funniest moments on live television are the ones nobody planned. That was certainly the case on FOX 2 Detroit’s Good Day Detroit, when anchor Deena Centofanti was discussing the History Channel survival series Alone with co-anchor Ryan Ermanni and meteorologist Derek Kevra. The conversation was perfectly innocent: contestants on the show must find their own food, and Centofanti was explaining how valuable beavers can be used as a source of fat and meat. But the discussion quickly veered into viral-TV territory when she noted that contestants were “looking for fat in the beaver” and that beaver was especially sought after. Ermanni was already beginning to crack.

Then came the question that broke him: “Do you think you could eat beaver?” Centofanti appeared to be talking entirely about survival food, but Ermanni immediately buried his face in his hands and erupted in laughter. The reason was the unmistakable double entendre: “beaver” has long been used as vulgar slang for female genitalia, making the otherwise innocent question sound decidedly adult. Centofanti’s continued explanation that the animal provides both fat and meat only made it harder for Ermanni to regain his composure. Eventually, he managed to tell her, “You’re really funny. You’re a really funny gal.”

The clip quickly spread across social media, where viewers seized on the contrast between Centofanti’s seemingly straight-faced survival discussion and Ermanni’s inability to keep it together. Ermanni even joined in afterward, sharing the clip himself and joking that he had no idea eating beaver was such a major part of Alone. That willingness to laugh at the moment helped turn what could have been an awkward live-TV blooper into exactly the kind of spontaneous exchange audiences love.

Ultimately, the FOX 2 Detroit “beaver incident” is a reminder of why live television can still produce moments that scripted entertainment simply cannot manufacture. There was no elaborate punchline or comedy sketch—just an innocent discussion, an unfortunately phrased question and one anchor who understood the alternative meaning a little too quickly. Centofanti may have been talking about surviving in the wilderness, but once Ermanni started laughing, millions of people online were in on the other joke too.
