A disturbing scene unfolded at NBC’s TODAY studios on July 16 when 3rd Hour TODAY co-host Craig Melvin was confronted backstage by an intruder who allegedly bypassed security and hurled racist slurs at him shortly before the show went live.
Melvin’s co-hosts Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer were in the building for the broadcast. The suspect reportedly had been asking for Roker before confronting Melvin. Security quickly intervened, and the suspect was arrested. Thankfully, Melvin was not physically injured.
Despite the frightening ordeal, Melvin returned to the air the very next day to reassure viewers that he was “safe and sound.” His absence from the show this week was part of a previously scheduled vacation—not a result of the incident.
No one should have to endure racist abuse simply for doing their job, and this incident has raised serious questions about security at one of America’s most recognizable television studios.
